Railcar Switchman

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Oversees the movement of railcars and trains, manages crew starts, crew size, and overtime in a cost-effective manner Observe, interpret, and relay arm, lantern, or radio signals and all other indications affecting movement of a train and its cars Oversee the operations of track switches (visually check switch condition and direction) to change the direction of the engine or cars within yard limits or on the main railroad; apply or release hand brakes to switch or perform other duties Communicates special instructions from the management team to others and disperse oral and written instructions to maintain group continuity Meets the goals set by site management by managing equipment and staff, reporting results, and recommending solutions.
Metrics may include equipment dwell, on-time train origination, right car/right train, work order compliance, and customer performance reporting Recognizes potential safety and environmental problems and implements procedures and training to achieve sound operations.
Coordinate efforts with safety and investigates accidents and incidents, determines root cause Conducts necessary training to achieve improved production and personnel growth Participates in periodic informational and staff meetings Recommends equipment and personnel performance level improvements as well as makes recommendations regarding hiring and termination of staff Prepare required daily reports and switch lists, manually or with a computer Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned Job
Qualifications:
10 years of Rail yard supervision/management and Loading management Experience with Yardmaster and Bourque Logistics Knowledge of railcar track list Must possess a valid TWIC card and driver's license Stable work history with good references from past employers High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience Job Type:
